Viola Basics

Welcome!

If you want to join an orchestra at school, or you just want to know how to play a stringed instrument, ask yourself a few questions. Do you want to play something classic that everyone knows about, or do you want to play something unique that everyone would be impressed with? If the answer to the second question is yes, then I recommend the viola. It's a great instrument that is similar to the violin, and you will find all of the basics on this site.

The viola has the same basic idea as a violin, but it is slightly larger and has a lower sound. There are seven basic notes in the musical world: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. The four strings on the viola are A, D, G, and C. To play the viola as a beginner, you need a shoulder rest. These can be purchased from any shop where you can buy a viola, or even off the internet. Unlike violins, violas are sized in inches rather than in fractions of a full size. There is no such thing as a full sized viola, but people typically only get up to 16" or 17". Ebay is a great place to buy instruments. If you are planning on being in the school beginner orchestra, Click Here to see a great instrument for purchase.

Cool Instrument Variations

Once you become a more advanced player, there are cool types of violas you can get, like electric ones. You can also get electric acoustic violas, which are both normal and electric.
